Starting from the stain
Where the water shows up inside is the end of its journey, not the start. It tracks along rafters, runs down the underside of the deck and drops wherever something stops it.

Water almost never comes in above the stain. Finding where it actually enters is most of the job, and it is the part that gets skipped.
Describe the stain โ (856) 347-3200A leak is the one call we treat as different. Water that is already inside is doing damage to insulation, plaster and framing every day it continues, and the longer it runs the more of the repair is interior rather than roof. We look at these sooner than ordinary surveys for that reason.
Where the water shows up inside is the end of its journey, not the start. It tracks along rafters, runs down the underside of the deck and drops wherever something stops it.
Where there is safe access, the underside of the deck is the most useful surface on the whole house. Daylight, dark staining and wet insulation point back up the path far better than guessing from the slope.
With a direction to work in, the outside search is short: the nearest penetration, valley, chimney junction or lifted course above the track the water took.
You see the thing that is letting water in, not a description of it. That matters more here than anywhere else, because a leak repair is invisible once it is done.
Put something under the drip, move what you can out of the way, and photograph the stain each day so the spread is on record. Do not go up to look yourself โ a wet slope is the single most dangerous surface on a house, and the photographs can wait a day.
